Today I was giving some thought to my strap line – ‘Realise your true potential’ and this got me thinking about appreciation and achievement.

Life is increasingly challenging and this can and does lead to being anxious about everything. When this happens the anxiety can stop you from moving forward and realising your true potential.

I thought I would share with you the message from neurologist, Viktor Frankl, who said that ‘you can choose greatness for your life; reaching your full potential is not something that happens by mere chance, but rather is the result of marching towards a destination that is beyond what you would typically try to achieve’.

However when many of you fail to reach the high goal that you have set for yourself is to feel depressed and even feel a failure.

What I want to do in this blog is to get you to re-think how you view this. Remember if you have set yourself a high goal then even if you don’t reach it you have achieved much more than you would have done by not even trying. I know, I know, I can hear you say ‘but I will still feel like a failure’. So how can you get round this?

What you need to do is to find a balance in your thinking – you need to appreciate what you have achieved. If you are going to go for high goals and want to be happy you cannot and must not have a success or failure view. You should always do your best and then be grateful for what you achieve.

So let’s think about achieving goals in a different way. Make today an excellent time to take a second shot at something that didn’t work out the first time around. Of course falling flat on your face can really damage your confidence and self-esteem but life is challenging and rejection and even failure are part of life and they do add character and strength.

But failure and rejection are truly a part of life, and they really do add character. So persevere, go back into the ‘ring’ and ensure that what you are adding to your character is courage (or according to my 2nd attribute you have audacity – you are being brave.

So I repeat when pursuing any goal remember to appreciate how far you have come and even if you never reach your high goal, you are better off than you were before.

Start today – have audacity and remember to appreciate your achievements.
